Protecting Sensitive Information – Do Small Companies Have a Chance?

In today’s cybersecurity threat landscape the question is often asked, “Do smaller companies have a chance to protect sensitive information from cyber attackers?”  My answer to that is YES, ABSOLUTELY!!

The real question is how.  Should a smaller company secure their own sensitive information or that of their customers themselves or should the enlist partners to help them?   For me that decision comes down to the smaller company’s business model and resources.  If a smaller company is an Information Technology (IT) company and has sufficient resources to focus on cybersecurity, then by all means they are better set up for success to secure sensitive information.

On the flip side, there are many smaller companies whose focus is not Information Technology (IT).  They are engineering firms, manufacturers, machine shops, and the like and they are the best at what they do, it just isn’t IT or cybersecurity.  In these cases, a trusted partner needs to be involved to help protect and/or securely host sensitive information.   These trusted partners can help smaller companies do the following:

  1. Assess cybersecurity posture
  2. Provide advice on how best to either secure their sensitive information (cybersecurity solutions or processes)
  3. Secure and host sensitive information for the them

For smaller companies that can use this type of “trusted partner” help, or for companies that provide sensitive information to smaller companies, Exostar can lend a hand. As a cloud company that is totally committed to organizations working within highly regulated industries, Exostar is well-positioned to offer expertise in all forms of identity, credentialing, and access (including identity proofing, multifactor authentication (MFA), single sign-on (SSO), and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).  We also offer secure hosting of sensitive information (NIST 800-171 compliant) and applications, as well as security assessments to NIST SP 800-171 and overall industry best practices.

Our highly secure enterprise collaboration solutions are ITAR-, NIST 800-171-, and HIPAA-compliant environments where teams can safely and securely share business sensitive information – both internally and externally.

When you’re a smaller company in a hostile environment, it’s good to have a trusted partner.
